The Doorway to Elderhood
This program for "older" men is about developing A Golden Vision for the Second Fifty Years. It will raise
important questions, provide needed validation, and give men perspective,
all while helping them to consider how to best position for the second fifty years. While the exact
content is somewhat driven by the attendees, a sample of the possible topics and questions includes:
- What happened to OUR elders? Why don't we have a good map for this adventure? Why do so many middle-aged and
older men feel they are going it alone, facing a void, and feeling fear instead of joy as they look down the road?
- What are the important questions men on the threshold of Elderhood should be asking?
- What is the "work" a man needs to do to confidently and enthusiastically step across the line
into this next life segment?
- What are the cultural messages confronting men at this important juncture? What stereotypes will men have
to fight in order to find meaning, direction, and a positive vision of themselves as male Elders?
- What could a "golden" vision of Elderhood look like? What are the critical elements in a positive model
of Elderhood that could inspire and draw men forward? What does a "realized" Elder male look like?
- How does a man actually step into Elderhood? What does he do, what should he feel, and what will the
rest of the world see?
This shared experience will create a forum where men can talk about these challenges, share their common
experience, and begin to learn how to best navigate this challenging territory. As we learn how to travel,
we'll remember, "we are all in this alone . . . together."
For many men, this workshop will launch the next adventure on their Journey to Manhood.
